From the Chair - Dr Mike Beckoff

Greetings for 2009 from the Chair of GPSA on behalf of the Board.  Welcome to our first newsletter for 2009 with a new format designed to be poignant, succinct and relevant to our members and partners. Recently the Health Minister, the Hon John Hill, invited the Chair and CEO of GPSA to participate in a Forum to discuss the possibility of forming 'South Australia's Health Industry Charter'. The Minister delivered the SA Health perspective and then a Panel, including the Chair of GPSA, was asked to discuss various aspects of such a Charter. There was a good debate from the audience, including participation from our new CEO, Gretchen Scinta. See attached Trigger Questions for the Panel and a preliminary draft of a possible Health Industry Charter. We invite your comments and feedback and will collate that information in order to consolidate a broad network perspective.

From the CEO - Gretchen Scinta

It has been some months since the last GPSA newsletter as we’ve been working to develop this e-news communication linked to our new website launched in late 2008.  This year has started off with a bang amidst an environment of international and national challenges and changes that are shifting the way that we approach the work we are doing to deliver a world class health system.  With the ever increasing pace of change, GPSA is aiming to exchange timely and relevant information in a useful format.  This communication will contain notifications about key matters, updates about program activities, communiqués from national and state agencies that we work with, upcoming events and other relevant links.  For the first few months, it will be distributed bi-weekly.  We welcome your feedback and ideas about the communications during this time.

Tour Down Under – GPSA Team complete Challenge ride

Dr Alison Edwards reports: Friday 23 January saw the morning start fairly early for the General Practice SA team entered in the Challenge ride - the community bike ride with the Tour Down Under. The team attracted a team of five participants, three of whom chose the 97km ride from Mt Pleasant, and two stalwarts completing the 155km from Burnside Village. It was a great day for a ride and it was wonderful to be involved in the sea of yellow jerseys pedalling off into the distance as far as the eye could see. Our aim in cycling under the banner of General Practice SA was to lead by example and inspire others in knowing that we are doing as we preach! We were approached on the day by a few other cycling GPs who were unaware of the team, so if you know anyone who might like to get involved next year please get them to get in touch with Dr Alison Edwards at aedwards@pbc.mndgp.org.au
