Health Reform Progress in South Australia - Divisions of General Practice and Medicare Locals

What’s happening with the evolution of Divisions and Medicare Locals in South Australia?
In early November, Minister Nicola Roxon announced the second round of successful Medicare Locals. South Australia has achieved its full quota of five Medicare Locals; two metropolitan and three rural.

Are Divisions closing down, and how will program delivery be affected?
Fortunately, most Divisions are not closing down, which will mean that gaps in program and service delivery will be minimal in South Australia. Most Medicare Locals will maintain service delivery through Divisions during the first year of establishment, and many will continue beyond that time.

Who do I contact if I have questions, or information to share with GPs in a specific area?
GPSA will continue to assist with general queries about primary health reform, but we recommend direct contact with Divisions and Medicare Locals for activities related to their specific areas.
