Nursing in General Practice
Overview
The Nursing in General Practice (NiGP) Program promotes the role of nursing in general practice. General Practice SA endorses the Australian General Practice Network vision that every general practice in Australia be supported and encouraged to employ or have access to a general practice nurse. Services delivered by nurses in general practice:
- relieve workforce pressure in primary care
- improve the prevention and management of chronic disease
- improve access to services and the quality and integration of patient care.
Objectives:
General Practice SA contributes to the initiative through the following objectives:
- building the capacity of Divisions to deliver support services for nursing in general practice
- promotion and dissemination of information and resources contributing to, and encouraging, professional development opportunities for nurses in general practice.
Program Activities
GPSA is involved in a range of activities that include:
- generating and sustaining strategic partnerships and collaborations at a State and local level
- integration of NiGP into other State and Commonwealth programs and initiatives
- promoting and supporting the recruitment and retention of the general practice nursing workforce
- supporting nursing innovation, change and adoption in the general practice setting
- developing communication strategies to promote NiGP undertakings and projects such as the Biennial nursing in general practice workforce survey, nurse led clinics and the Practice Nurse Incentive Program (PNIP) workshops and resources
- the establishment of a SA leadership group.
