GP Obstetric Shared Care (SA)

Overview:

In 2003, GPSA received funding from the State Department of Human Services (SA) to implement a state-wide framework for GP obstetric shared care. The aim of the program was to develop a model of GP obstetric shared care that would ensure standardised best practice antenatal care across SA and would provide continuity of care for women with low risk pregnancies. In GP OSC (SA) the majority of antenatal care is provided by the GP and birthing takes place at the local obstetric hospital.

The program initially involved partnerships between the 5 major metropolitan hospitals providing obstetric care, the 5 divisions of General Practice, and GPSA; in 2005 the program was expanded to include rural GPs

GP OSC (SA) utilises a standardised protocol which sets out currently accepted best practice guidelines for antenatal care, and is available both in hard copy and online. The substantive record for the pregnancy for patients choosing GP OSC (SA) is the SA Pregnancy Record, which is “held” by the patient and taken to all appointments, including those conducted by the GP and those conducted by the hospital or obstetrician, thereby providing the major link between carers and facilitating appropriate communication.

Currently there are approximately 400 urban and 200 rural GPs accredited to the program and over 1600 women choose GP OSC (SA) each year.

New GPs are welcomed to the program, and may apply by completing the Registration Form (link below) and submitting it as instructed on the form.

Program Objectives:

  • To provide ongoing and sustainable obstetric shared care services for women who wish to have antenatal and postnatal care provided by their GP with delivery at a public hospital;
  • To provide an ongoing accreditation and CPD program for GPs who wish to participate in an obstetric shared care program;
  • To evaluate services to ensure equal or better than traditional hospital care, as evidenced by maternal and neonatal outcomes and patient and GP satisfaction surveys.
